Forgiveness freed me from the grip of past wrongs + wounds. Here’s how.
In the summer of 2009, while pastoring in inner-city Detroit, I was home alone when awakened by the sound of breaking glass from the man who had broken into my home. In the vicious fight that ensued, I was stabbed 37 times and left for dead.
As I awaited death, I began to pray for my family. But when God spoke back to me, “They still need you,” I knew I had to fight to survive.
While I worked to recover, I became obsessed with vengeance and spent months hunting my attacker to bring him to justice. The hate in my heart had consumed me, taking my security, my home, my finances, and my children’s innocence along with it.
Through God’s redeeming power, I began the fight to forgive my attacker instead.
Today, I write to my attacker in prison, I minister regularly to those on death row, and I share my testimony to inspire, coach, and guide people to fulfill the Biblical Forgiveness Mandate – to forgive “just as” God in Christ forgives.
